More Signs Your Boiler Could Need Repairing or Replacing

Our boilers are something we rely on every day, and it’s never fun when something goes wrong. If it breaks down, this is obviously a huge convenience, but the upside is you know what to do: call a qualified heating engineer. At other times, there might be something not quite right but you don’t know what it is or what you should do about it.

We recently wrote a guide on how to work out if it would be cheaper to repair or replace your boiler. This post was popular, as it answered a lot of boiler-related questions homeowners think about but don’t know the answer to. We’re now following up with specific signs to look out for that indicate you may be heading for a boiler repair or, in some cases, a boiler replacement.

If you have any questions about the health of your boiler after reading this, just get in touch and we’ll do our best to help. You can call us on 01924 734530 or 07900 417080 or contact us online

Signs your boiler may need repairing or replacing

Even boilers that are well built and carefully designed go wrong sometimes. Parts wear out and elements of your central heating system can become faulty, causing chaos and full boiler breakdowns in some cases.

Where possible, you’ll naturally want to get your boiler repaired, as a new unit is expensive and not an investment to make lightly. At Smart Gas Plumbing & Heating, we always do our best to repair boilers and bring them back to health - except if they are unsafe or if we think continual repairs will end up costing you more. In this situation we explain our assessment and let you make a decision about the next steps and whether you’d like to consider having a new boiler installed.

Even if your boiler hasn’t broken down, if you notice any of the following it will need inspecting:

  • Your radiators aren’t heating up even though the boiler is on.
  • There is water leaking from your boiler, even just a small amount.
  • It isn’t performing very effectively, for example it’s taking a long time to heat your radiators or hot water.
  • It switches itself off randomly.

You Gas Safe registered engineer will carry out an inspection of your boiler to identify the issue. It may be a problem with your thermostat or there may be a part within your boiler that needs replacing. They can inform you about the timeframe for carrying out the repair and also the cost.

When it’s something serious

Sometimes, a leak can indicate a serious problem with your boiler and a repair may not be possible. Other times it may seem a part simply needs replacing, but if your boiler has experienced the same issue several times then it could indicate a major issue that is triggering the same part to break again and again.

At Smart Gas Plumbing & Heating we assess each boiler on a case by case basis. We know they are complicated creatures and we never make an assumption about what the issue might be. We use our experience and knowledge, together with the circumstances of your boiler - for example its age and the number of issues, to make an informed assessment and advise you on the best course of action.
