How much does it cost to install a new boiler?

If you need to replace your boiler or are planning on having a new one installed to improve the efficiency of your heating system, the cost of having this done will no doubt be one of the main things on your mind.

A new boiler is a big investment to make, although it brings with it many benefits, including possibly saving you money in the long run from fewer repair costs and better efficiency leading to lower energy bills.

However, there’s no escaping that there is a big initial outlay when it comes to having a new boiler installed. We explain more about how a boiler cost is worked out below.

How much will a new boiler cost you?

New boiler costs can vary hugely, as they depend on a great number of factors in deciding the overall cost that you need to pay. This doesn’t mean your heating engineer just plucks a number out of the air, rather, it’s the needs of your central heating system that will impact the total cost.

The price and installation of a new boiler can start as low as £1,500 and rise to as much as £5,000. This is naturally a huge price range, so it’s important to do your homework and get a good understanding of the boiler you want, that will best suit the needs of your home and family.

What decides the cost of your new boiler?

At Smart Gas Plumbing & Heating we always aim to provide a high standard of customer service from day one, so gather the following information from the homeowners we see in order to provide a completely accurate quote:

Your existing boiler type and current central heating system condition.

This lets us assess the scope of work requiring for installing your new boiler. For example, if you’re switching from a combi boiler to another combi boiler the installation will be straight forward and less labour intensive. As a unit price, combi boilers also tend to cost less, brand and size-dependent.

However, many people are choosing to replace their older regular boiler with a combi boiler, and this means the removal of the old water tank and hot water cylinder, as well as replacing the old boiler and setting up the new one.

On the other hand, if you are switching from a combi boiler to a system boiler, we’ll need to install a hot water cylinder, as well as replacing your combi for a different kind of unit.

Other elements required

If your central heating system is in overall good order and not too old, you may just need your boiler replacing. However, in some cases you will need thermostatic radiator valves putting in, in place of your old valves. You may also need a new thermostat or new radiators.

Depending on the age of other elements that work with your boiler, for example, your hot water cylinder, a replacement may also need to be factored into the cost, if it is no longer working as it should or incompatible with your new system.

The brand of your boiler

While there are many decent boiler brands on the market, you do tend to get what you pay for in terms of quality. For example, if you are happy with a very basic design brand, the cost will be lower. However, brands with a good reputation have this thanks to a more premium design and reliable parts, so while you may pay more initially, buying a decent brand could save you money in the long run.

The size of your boiler

This refers to the output of your boiler, as some boilers have more power than others. If you are looking for a boiler to serve a big family with a high demand for hot water, then you probably want a boiler with a larger output and therefore a bit more oomph. This is usually reflected in the price of the unit.
