When is it Cheaper to Replace or Repair Your Boiler?

Your boiler is an integral part of your home, bringing with it heat, comfort and hot water. It’s never fun when it breaks down, not least because you’re unlikely to know what’s gone wrong!

At Smart Gas Plumbing & Heating we always use our boiler expertise to see if the problem can be fixed through a straightforward repair. We know nobody wants to pay out more than they need to, so we’d always look to fix your boiler where it makes sense to.

There are of course times, though, that repairing your boiler isn’t straightforward and considering a replacement is the most sensible option. Below we’ve written a guide to help you work out what your best option might be when your boiler breaks down.

Boiler repairs Vs boiler replacement

The main thing to come to most people’s minds when it comes to boiler issues is cost and safety. Naturally, you want to find the most cost effective ways to solve your boiler woes safely. Here are some things to consider.

How often your boiler needs repairing:

Parts wear out over time, so it’s not unusual to require occasional repairs to your boiler. However, if a part gets fixed or replaced and then breaks again, it’s not usually good news. Equally, if one repair is carried out and then a different one is needed within a year, it could mean your boiler is on its way out.

How difficult parts are to source:

There can be fewer new parts available for older boilers that have been phased out by the manufacturer. This means it can be tricky to source replacement parts if your boiler is nearing or over 10 years old. If your replacement part is hard to find and therefore more expensive, it may be worth thinking about whether or not it’s worth re-investing in a boiler that may not last much longer.

How safe your boiler is:

If your boiler is condemned as unsafe, your Gas Safe registered engineer will be able to advise you on what needs to be done to ensure the issue is resolved. However, if your boiler is condemned with something serious or it happens more than once, it’s likely to signify bad news. Safety with your gas boiler is paramount, so think about a new one if your boiler is putting you at risk.

How high your energy bills are:

Newer boilers are much more energy-efficient than older ones, so if you are looking to reduce your energy bills, replacing your boiler rather than repairing it could be the most cost-effective way forwards in the long-term.
