What Size boiler Should I Install?

Known officially as output, finding the right size of boiler to have installed in your home depends on a few different factors. While you’ll also have to consider the type of boiler that’s right for you, deciding on the size is an important element in choosing the one that best fits your needs.

The right boiler output ensures your boiler will provide the right amount of heat and hot water. If you don’t require a lot, choosing one with a lower output will also save you money on your energy bills, so it’s worth taking the time to consider this before committing to a particular boiler installation.

There’s very little the expert team at Smart Gas Plumbing & Heating don’t know about boilers, so we’ve written the following guide to help you easily work out the boiler size that’s right for you.

Finding the right output for your home

House or flat size

Homes that are smaller tend to need a boiler with less power, or a lower output. If there are more rooms to heat, however, a bigger output is probably more suitable so that the boiler can do its job properly.

Number of bathrooms

If you have multiple bathrooms in your home then you’ll probably need a larger output for your boiler. Smaller outputs are suitable for homes with a single water source, i.e. one bathrooms, but if you require your boiler to direct to multiple sources then you’ll need one with some more oomph.

Current boiler size

If your family’s circumstances haven’t changed then your current boiler size may be a useful guide. If you don’t feel it has met your needs then you probably require a larger output next time. On the other hand, if you have grown-up children who have now left home then you may not need such a large output anymore and require a smaller size for your new boiler.

Amount of heating used

If you and your family have the heating on a lot then it makes sense to opt for a larger output than if you use the heating minimally.

Making an output calculation

Think about the above factors and have a chat with your family about how you all use heating and water. Also work out the number of rooms and bathrooms in your home, which can then form part of this guide to calculate your boiler output need.

Before making a final decision, discuss your thoughts with your chosen Gas Safe registered engineer, who can offer  experienced guidance on the most suitable boiler to fulfill the needs of your home.
