Regular Boiler VS Systems Boiler?

When you’re having a new boiler installed, you need to decide which type is right for your home. You may be influenced by your current or old boiler type, or you may be getting a boiler fitted in a home for the first time. In either case you can take your pick of boilers, so long as the one you go for fits your needs.

The expert team at Smart Gas have written this guide about two of the most popular boiler types: regular and system. Read on to find out more and to help you decide which one is right for your home.

What is a regular boiler?

You may have also heard regular boilers be referred to as traditional or conventional boilers. They work well in homes with more than one bathroom and for people with a higher demand for hot water. A regular boiler lets you run more than one hot water source at once, for example a bath as well as a shower or the hot water tap in the kitchen.

Regular boilers don’t provide instant hot water. You need to either switch it on or set it to a timer. However, because they include a tank, this can then keep the water hot for the rest of the day so you don’t need to keep turning it on. Most families heat water once or twice a day, depending how many baths or showers they are planning to have.

If you have a regular boiler installed, they also need a hot water tank and separate cylinder.

What is a system boiler?

System boilers have many similarities with regular boilers, also working with a hot water cylinder and requiring water to be heated rather than running hot instantly. With a system boiler you can also use more than one hot water source at once so they still suit homes with more than one bathroom.

The main difference is them not requiring a separate tank, which is usually situated in the loft space. This is because they’re designed with built-in circulating pumps, negating the need for a separate feed in the loft. This saves storage, and also means there’s less risk of leaks or damage.

Lastly, because system boilers are newer to the market than regular ones, they’re also designed to work with solar thermal systems. This offers an energy-saving, efficient choice for homeowners to reduce their CO2 emissions and their energy bills.
