Pros and Cons of a Combi Boiler

Combination or combi boilers are efficient central heating and hot water units. They negate the need for a water tank in your home as they combine both the heating and hot water elements within the one unit, hence the name.

Being smaller, they save both space and energy, so are worth seriously considering when choosing a new boiler. However, they won’t suit every home so the expert team at Smart Gas Plumbing & Heating have written the following guide to help you decide if a combi boiler is right for you.

Pros of a combi boiler

They heat water on demand, so no need to wait or set a timer on your heating system in order to have a bath or shower.

They’re cheaper to install, thanks to being simpler than a traditional set-up, which requires a water tank and immersion heater.

They cost less to run because they just heat water as you need it, so you may well find that you save £££ on your energy bills over the year.

They’re compact, so won’t take up too much room in your home - and you won’t need somewhere to store a water tank either.

They help your home’s EPC rating due to being so efficient. This can be a great selling point if you move house in the future.

They’re often cleaner than a traditional system as the water is piped directly from the mains rather than sitting in a tank first. This prevents a build-up of rust and sludge so often found with other types of boilers.

Cons of a combi boiler

They can only send hot water to a single source, meaning they don’t suit homes with multiple bathrooms.

Their performance depends on the mains pressure. Before having a combi boiler installed, it’s important to check what the mains pressure in your area is like as if it isn’t good, neither will your boiler’s performance be.

Because there’s no immersion heater with a combi boiler, if it breaks you’ll have no other option for heating your water, except if you have an electric shower.

You can’t run a power shower from a combi boiler, due to the pressure being set by the mains.
