More Tips for Purchasing a New Boiler

The process of buying a new boiler can feel like a long and complicated one. With lots to consider, many homeowners worry about making the wrong choice. A new boiler is a big financial investment, so naturally you want to understand all you can about it in order to make the right decision.

We recently wrote a post with some tips to bear in mind when purchasing a new boiler. As this proved so useful to our readers, we’re following it with this more detailed guide to put you in the know about buying a new boiler.

Whereabouts you’d like your boiler to go

When you have a new boiler installed, it’s a potential opportunity to shift things around to make them as convenient as possible for you. For example, your old boiler may be in the kitchen, but there may be scope to move your new one to a cupboard under the stairs or to an integrated garage. This will depend on a few factors like the location of outside walls to your desired position, as well as the type of boiler you choose and its size. The best thing is to have a few options in mind and discuss them with your heating engineer once you have chosen your boiler.

How many people live in your house

The number of people living in your home is one of the biggest things to consider when buying a new boiler. The more occupants there are, the higher the demand for hot water will be. This affects both the type of boiler: combi, system, conventional - and also the size or output. If you have a large family you should opt for a more powerful boiler, and if you have more than one bathroom in your home you should choose a conventional or system boiler over a combi. This is because combi boilers only run to a single water source, so you’d be unable to run a shower and bath at the same time, for example. Combi boilers, however, are an ideal choice for many people in smaller homes with fewer occupants, performing very efficiently in these cases.

New technology

If you’re upgrading your boiler it’s the perfect time to consider whether you want to incorporate some Smart technology into your central heating system. While your boiler is being switched to a newer model, you can also easily have your thermostat changed to a Smart one. This will allow you to control your heating from an app on your mobile phone or tablet, and adjust your heating on the go. You could also plan to have your meters changed to Smart meters, which will help you keep a better eye on the energy that you use so you can make your home more efficient.

Multiple quotes

You will probably have heard this before when looking for a tradesperson, but getting 3 separate quotes really is important. Quotes can vary hugely from business to business, and some people charge in a different way, for example some will give you a total cost and others a charge per day. Always ensure you agree the full cost of the boiler and its installation before committing, so you don’t end up paying more than you anticipated from the original quote.

Your budget

Boilers are undoubtedly a big expense, but again the cost of a new one can vary dramatically depending on the brand, type and size. Other factors include whether you need new radiators or a tank installed in addition to the boiler. It’s important to ensure your budget is realistic and you’re able to pay for your boiler before committing. Some engineers offer finance options to help spread the cost, although these will incur some interest. If you’re considering boiler finance, it’s wise to discuss it with your heating engineer to fully understand your options and their terms.
