How to Keep Your Boiler in Good Condition October 21, 2019 Although your boiler is one of the most valuable things in your home, you probably don’t think about it much. While it provides you and your family with heat, hot water and comfort, it probably only comes to your attention when it breaks down. But by looking after your boiler before it gets to that point, you can help avoid the hassle and headache of needing repairs. Follow our simple and useful tips to easily care for your boiler and keep it healthy for longer. Have a yearly serviceThis is probably the best thing you can do to keep your boiler in good, healthy condition. During an annual service, a Gas Safe registered engineer will thoroughly inspect all the main parts of your boiler to make sure they’re working properly. They will also check for any emerging problems and try to solve them before they become big issues that require repair. Lastly, they’ll clean and dust inside the boiler and its main parts, which will remove any debris that may cause damage and affect performance.Get your system powerflushedA powerflush usually only needs to take place around every five or six years, but it can massively improve the health of your central heating system. During a powerflush, a Gas Safe registered engineer will inject water at high velocity through your whole system to flush out dust, rust, sludge and other debris that causes blockages and can lead to serious damage.Keep it cleanA boiler service will take care of cleaning the inside of your boiler, but like with other important items in your home, regular external cleaning will help keep it in good condition. When you are cleaning your house, wipe the outside of the boiler and the bottom and top with a clean, dry cloth to help prevent dust getting inside.Use itJust as you wouldn’t leave your car unused for months, nor should you with your boiler. Even if you don’t need its heat in the summer months, switch it on once a week - just for 15 minutes or so - to keep it turned over and prevent it from seizing up when the weather turns chilly and you need it every day.
