Common Boiler Problems During the Winter

The worst time for your boiler to break down is during the winter months. When it’s cold outside we crave a warm and comfortable home more than ever. If your boiler has broken down due to age and running its course, it’s probably time to consider a new boiler installation. Other times repairs may be an option, and there are some things you can even do yourself without having to call out a plumber.

Here at Smart Gas Plumbing & Heating, we’ve dealt with every boiler issue imaginable. From repairs to new boiler installation, there’s nothing we don’t know about them! We’ve written the following guide to give you a lowdown on possible boiler problems in winter, and how best to tackle them.

Freezing pipes

Frozen pipes are unfortunately a common issue during winter. We advise customers to leave their heating on low when they are out, usually set to around 14 degrees. This helps prevent the pipes from getting too cold and freezing, because the impact of a burst pipe can be truly devastating.

If you find your heating suddenly not working, it may be down to the condensation pipe (at the back of your boiler) having froze. You can resolve this simply by pouring warm water (not hot) over the pipe until it thaws out and your boiler can do its job again!

Broken thermostat

Your thermostat is quite fragile and if a component within it has worn out then it will lose its ability to balance your home’s temperature. If this happens you will need to contact a Gas Safe registered engineer, but they should quickly be able to identify the issue and replace the unit if necessary.

Pilot light out

When your pilot light goes out it’s effectively your boiler switching off and you won’t be able to get any heat or hot water. Sometimes it isn’t caused by a major problem, other times it can be due to a serious fault with the boiler or because there is a build-up of gas. Due to the risk of danger, always contact a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer for assistance who will be able to investigate safely.

Full boiler breakdown

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, your boiler will still cause you problems. If it’s reached a certain age or is requiring regular repairs, it may be time to think about having a new one installed. Committing to a new boiler installation is a big decision, but it can save you both hassle and expense from lower energy bills and not needing regular repair work.
